B business In its 1982 Progress Report, the Lonsdale Quay Development Board has pointed to major con- tributions that North Vancouver's waterfront revitalization project has made to the City this year, according to Chairman Derek Inman. The Lonsdale Quay Development Board is the bedy set up te oversee - developments on behalf of both North Vancouver’s City Council and the Lonsdale Quay Development Com- pany. Members include Inman, North Vancouver Aldermen Elko Kroon and Gary Payne, and Jim McLean and Eric Martin of the British Columbia Development Corporation. “In terms of jobs and tax benefits to the City, Lon- sdale Quay is a bright light in a very difficult cconomic penod,” says Inman. According to the report, the City of North Vancouver received $330,000 in property taxes for the area this year, compared to $39,000 in 1979 -- a major step in the way towards 1985's projected $750,000 annual! contributions. The 275,000 square foot Insurance Corporation of British Columbia head office building has been closed in and will open in mid-1983, when more than 1,200 1.C.B.C. employees will be relocated to the North Shore. Another Crown Cor- poration ~- B.C. Rail -+ has also undertaken = con- Struction of a new head office building. Slated for completion early in the new year, the British Columbia Rail Centre will be occupied by up to 600 employees and tenants by spring. One of Lonsdale Quay’s key objectives has always been the new public water- front’ open space, Inman says, and 1982 saw com. pletion of the northem section of the planned 6'% acre park. Next to the park is the Marine Training I[n- stitute of B.C., which has been operating successfully in Lonsdale Quay for the past year. Looking forward to 1983, the Development Board highlights more jobs -- up to 300 more man years of con- struction work, not only on the I.C.B.C. and B.C. Rail head officés, bul also on two further office buildings (totalling 100,000 square feet) that will begin con- struction in 1983 and involve an investment of $10 million. Inman adds that the Lonsdale Quay Develop- ment Company is now ac- tively considering under- taking additional con- struction projects within the development on_ property slated for low-rise retail stores and offices. Such development would hkely include a pubhc waterfront market and related specialty retail outlets of the kind which have been so. suc- cessful on Granville Island in Vancouver Concluding — the progress report, Inman points to an important related development.
