By GEORGE DALGLEISH Contributing Writer Over the years, some homeown- ers have vented their dryer inside their house during the winter months, to conserve energy by capturing the heat that is produced by the dryer. Various devices have been used to divert the warm air from the dryer to the inside of the house during the winter and divert it outside the house in summer. While diverting the dryer air in- side the house in the winter months conserves energy, it can produce problems. Do not vent a gas dryer to the inside of the house at any time. Diverting an electric dryer exhaust inside a house can increase the humidity levels considerably. The amount of humidity pro- duced by the dryer will be directly related to the number of times the dryer is used, and the amount of clothes that are dried. A family consisting of two or three small children, may produce three to four times as much humidity through drying clothes, than a two-member family. However, humidity is not the only problem, there are others. Experts are now telling us that res- Butterfly garden to be planted LYNN CANYON Ecology Centre needs help planting a_ butterfly garden by children aged 8-12. A major complaint has been allergy problems. But breathing these residues could produce other problems. Whether or not proof can be furnished that breathing such resi- dues from clothes washing chemi- cals can be injurious to your health or not, remains to be seen. One sure way of not being affected by breathing such residue, is to vent your dryer outside. There are problems with venting dryers outside that usually have to do with the improper installation of the vent pipe or an inoperative or defective vent hood. If your dryer is in the basement, it is often necessary to cut a hole in the concrete wall between the floor joist or under the floor joist, in order to vent a clothes dryer through the wall. In some cases, the hole can be SANDERSON “CONCRETE INC. made between the floor joist through the header, which in most cases is wood, The dryer vent pipe can be metal or can be an insulated pipe made from compressed fibreglass. If a metal pipe is used then it must be well insulated. The colder the climate you live in, the more insulation required. _ Insulation usually consists of fibreglass batts wrapped around the pipe and held in place with masking tape. The pipe and the in- sulation should be securely wrap- ped with polyethylene plastic and sealed using a special tape made for the sealing of plastic vapor barrier. If the plastic does not provide a true vapor barrier around the in- sulation, warm moist air can leak into the insulation, and condensate there. On cold days, you will have a soggy, Sagging mess around your dryer vent pipe. Where the dryer vent pipe goes through the wal] it must be well sealed all around.
