we, sete, 8 ~ Friday, February 15, 1991 - North Shore News MAILBOX Ample evidence claim not backed Dear Editor: Regarding the Jan. 16 letter “Condoms aren't fail-proof’? by J.M. White, there is a statement that your editorial board should have caught. White states that ‘‘there is am- ple evidence to prove that (White is referring to the teaching of sex education, the promotion of con- traception and the installation of condom machines in schools) these have led to increased pro- miscuity with epidemics of sexual- ly transmitted diseases and teenage pregnancies.’’ This statement has no basis of proof or fact and I wonder how your editorial board can publish a letter that claims to know something based on ‘‘am- ple’’ evidence when the author has not offered any figures or evi- dence to prove his/her case. There are facts and there are facts. it depends on whose infor- mation is most reliable. Your edi- torial board should have a more tigorous policy regarding state- ments claiming to be based on ‘tample’’ evidence. J. McPeanne North Vancouver Time has come to fight for peace Dear Editor: I am writing to express my sup- port for the stand the Canadian government has taken in the Per- sian Gulf War and to give a few suggestions as to why sanctions won’t work. When Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in August he met with condemnation from most of the countries of the world. The Unit- ed Nations called for sanctions in an effort to force him to withdraw his armies and return the Kuwaiti government to power. His response was to declare Kuwait a province of Iraq and to change the name of Kuwait City to South Iraq City. What have sanctions ac- complished in six months? Any sign of withdrawal from Hussein? No, instead he has spent the time fortifying his positions and redoubling his efforts to create “weapons of mass destruction.”’ This is not a man who believes in political solutions, rather he uses poison gas to settle domestic uprisings, he launches missiles at Tel Aviv in an effort to draw Israel into the war, and calls for terrorist strikes all over the world. We're not dealing with Ghandi here. Sanctions are easy for us here in Canada. The price of gas for our cars is up, but then, the price of gas is always up. It would have been easy to say wait a year, or two, or three, it would make no difference to us. It would, howev- er, make a difference to the peo- ple of Kuwait; their country is be- ing turned into a wasteland, the Iraqis take what they want and kill whomever gets in their way. It makes a difference to Third Werld countries whose energy bills have doubled, leaving [little money left for health and educa- tion. Even the citizens of Iraq, a country where public support for the government is not optional, will suffer from the effects of shortages. It makes a difference to the Americans, and other members of the multi-national forces which will have to go in there and risk their lives to free the people of Kuwait. The longer Saddam has to dig in his troops, the more lives will be lost. I’ve walked for peace. I've prayed for peace. I’ve talked and sung about peace. The time has come to fight for peace.. I’m pro- ud of our involvement in the Gulf. I would have been ashamed if we had taken the easy way out and turned our backs on our friends and allies. John Goodsell North Vancouver Reader agrees on war Dear Editor: Having been in the travel in- dustry for many of my working years, I must confess that I’ve often disagreed with Barbara Mc- Creadie’s opinions, and I'd be more inclined toward Iraqi cuisine than macaroni & cheese 365 ways! However, Barbara’s recent arti- cle ‘Mothers of the World Could Stop War” is up on my bulletin board where I intend to keep it for as long as this outrageous war continues. Well said, Barbara! It seems even the mothers are afraid to voice your sentiments — God forbid that any could dare to disagree in their hearts. Given the economic prognosis due to all this lunacy, perhaps Ud better re-consider some of your “‘Budget Beaters’? next week and possibly even prove that reconcili- ation of differences can sometimes manifest themselves in unexpected ways; without any kind of con- frontation, much less force! Jeannette Tate West Vancouver Thanks for Gulf column Dear Editor: Thank you indeed for Bob Hunter’s column in the Sunday, Jan. 20 issue of the North Shore News. It was high time somebody put the whole Gulf mess and the roles of their different actors into pro- per historical perspective.
