B4 - Wednesday, March 3, 1982 - North Shore News EE Sport METRO HOCKEY North Van shocked THE METROPOLIT- AN hockey league playoffs continued last weekend with mixed results for the North Shore’s three teams. The West Van Rockets won their first game, 4-3 in overtime over Port Coquitlam, while the regular season champion North Van Harbour City G.M. team was dropping a shocker, 12-5 at Coquitlam, and the West Van Continentals were losing 9-3 to Port Moody. The Rockets and Coquitlam now lead their best of 3 semi-final series 1- 0, while the Continentals are 02 in the 3 team double round-robin consolation round. In the North Van- Coquitlam game, North Van appeared flat after clinching the league regular season title 2 weeks ago, while Coquitlam was “up” for the game. Coquitlam struck early and often and led 9-1 before the Harbour City players knew what had hit them. In the consolation round game the Continentals inability to score on the power play cost them dearly. Port Moody was_ shor- thanded 11 times, but the C’s power play could manage only 2 goals while giving up 2 short handed goals. West Van goals were scored by Dave Cook, Steve Drum- mond, and Dave Brom- meland. Next up for the C’s are the Burnaby Winter Club (1-1) on Saturday (8:15 p.m. at West Van) and Port Moody (2-0) again next Monday at Port Moody. The men travelled to Nanaimo Friday to challenge the Malaspina College Mariners. The game could have gone either way, ac- cording to coach Neil Chester, but in the end the Blues were sunk 62-58. But on Saturday it was a different story, with both the men and women taking on winless Douglas College. The Firs, to put it bluntly, were axed, and the Blues couldn't be happier about giving them the needle in the Firs’ final game of the season. The men’s game, as Chester puts it, was over about 10 minutes into the first quarter. The Blues walked away with a 90-47 win, with Jones once again leading the scoring parade with 21 points, aided by Dave Lane’s 13. The women cheerfully slaughtered Douglas 90-10, dominating the game throughout. Joy Elliot netted 28 points, and Claire Carder assisted with 18. The men and women play their last game of the season against Vancouver Com- munity College this Saturday at Delbrook Gym. The ees atte 1 + (Saar Blo: ry women play at 6:30, and the men at 8:15 p.m. Both teams have also made it to the Totem conference playoffs. The men will be facing Malaspina, VCC and the College of New Caledonia in Prince George, and the women will be taking on vcc, CNC and Selkirk College at VCC. $ LAYING ON of hands? No, just part of Cap College's massacre of Douglas on the weekend. Douglas had no subs and lost a player at halftime because of fouling, thus playing one short in the second half.
