In an indignant letter to’ council, signed by 24 members of the Copper Cove Community Association, | vehemently protested council's failure to meet with them and discuss the whole night diving situation, which they think has nothing at all to do with prawns. “How dare the Parks and Recreation Advisory - Committee presume to make decisions which affect us and ‘our properties without the courtesy of any com- munication or consultation with us?” asks the letter, a copy of which has been sent they have = seer ene teem tttene five ms Se ateeadeane metioned prawns and that was why they finished up with prawn and beer parties on the beach. : Prohibition _of night diving, he added, was not recommended because at night divers can see sea life they cannot see at any other time. north shore. news 1139 Lonsdale Avenue, “North Vancouver, B.C. a V7M 2H4 OFFICEINEWS (604) 980-0511 ' CLASSIFIED 986-6222 CIRCULATION 986-1337 Publisher Peter Speck Associate Publisher Bob Graham Editorin-Chiet Noel Wright * Managing Editor Andy Fraser News Editor Chris Uoyd Photos. ' Spokesman’ for the community association say the prawn story is a red herring, so to speak, and maintain that the designation of the Cove as an underwater park, so far from solving the problem, may well attract even more divers. They accuse council’ of pandering to “commercial and other” scuba diving interests not even located in West Vancouver. Valerie Maynard, a long- time Cove resident and herself a licensed scuba diver, says the only ac- ceptable solution is a night- time ban on diving from perhaps 10 p.m. to7 a.m. ‘The residents, she added, are reconciled to daytime diving “but this is an carly- ....to-bed community and it's ; oe ” —potright-thatcwe-stoukt-be INPUT PUTINVITED —--; .£obbed of sleep. night after night for six or seven months each year.” The worst months, she explained, are March through June and again from September through = carly November. Divers generally avoid July and = August because the water is too murky in those months. She and other residents are particularly incensed by the aggressive attitude! of many of the divers when protests are made about their noise. “Less than ‘10 per cent of ; them come from West Vancouver,” she declared, “yet they have the cheek to say to me ‘Lady, if you don’t like it why don’t you move?” ITS THEIR YEAR and these 37 children’ are pictured preparing to leave. for an ecumenical con- ference on the Year of the Child, following thelr Saturday morning mass at the Child of Jesus Church on Burrard Reserve at Dollarton Highway. The conference was held on the Morley Reserve, near Edmonton. (Terry Peters photo) Meanwhile, municipal hall had evidently been alerted to the rumblings of revolt from the west. Before adjourning last weck for its August recess council in- vited community reaction to the extended underwater park proposal. Comments from interested parties, in the form of written submissions, must be delivered to ‘the municipal clerk's office before Sep- tember 6 and cvuuncil is expected to discuss the matter further at its Sep- tember 10 meeting. Copper Cove — residents however, are still seething. They regard themselves as the only interested party — and in much greater need of council protection than the prawns. ee ee ee - a ae mia mawe - 7 i - * 4 Se ee em em a ag - ‘ - Pe ee ee ad - er a « a ras - oe : . ees « a : : . ae : VANCOUVER’S ~ TOP SHOW _ LOUNGE Age pee apse ~Presents 27 ~ Smash Return sAlmeta Speaks FOUR SHOWS NIGHTLY NOW THROUGH AUG. 25 ...at the | International Plaza Hotel Corner Marine Drive and Capilano Road, North Vancouver Free Parking
