One can hardly blame the Prime Minister and. his advisers for adopting these Stone Age tactics in view of the results of Mr. Trudeau's stewardship over.the past 11 years. It's only in the past week’ or. two that . Liberal Party ads have . belatedly started to. feature’ pretty colored graphs purporting to show that Canada’s economy is “second:to none”. But for those of us accustomed to noting what such graphs don't show, even these belated efforts to create a record of: success provide more_ questions than an- swers. VIOLENTLY DISUNITED The record of the past 11 years which cannot be denied. includes:for starters, the fact that we have become a more violently disunited nation under our French-Canadian rime minister than at any time in our .history. So far from promising a solution to this sad state of affairs, there is every indication that Mr. Trudeau himself is a major part of the problem. y. “be “nothing | wrong: with such an ambition © We. have . chronic unemployment. of: around. eight. per cent-(14: per. cent: amoung young people) with. ro relief.in sight: Inflation -- -after: three years of controls which Mr.: Trudeau once vowed never to imipose — is’ . again nudging 10 per cent, gobbling our. savings and — inflicting severe hardship on hundreds of thousands. of pensioners and other fixed- income citizens. Our 1971 dollar today is worth a mére 53 cents, thanks largely to annual budget deficits which have soared from $1.5 billion to -the region of, $12 billion - Trudeau..-and -the _ Liberal _ during Mr. Trudeau’s tenure of office. Out of every $1,000 of federal taxes we pay, $130 goes to meet the interest, alone on Ottawa's debt — now growing at a rate that threatens, unless halted, to bring abont the complete collapse of the monetary system within four-or five years. - ? t The auditor-general has already indicated that the ‘Trudeau. government has virtually lost control of the public purse. Meanwhile, the federal civil service has swollen by a monstrous 52 per’ cent since 1968. Canada’s industry remains dominated by foreign ownership. And in many subtle ways the authority of Parliament ‘itself has been gradually eroded with the help of the faceless, non-. elected men: in the Prime Minister's Office. UNHAPPY YEARS The Trudeau years, let's ‘face it, have not been happy years for Canada. For many hundreds of thousands of individual Canadians -- particularly the unem- ployed, the students en- deavoring to enter the work force, the pensioners and. others on fixed incomes -- they have been dishear- tening and frightening years in a very direct sense.
