Decency kicked

Dear Editor:

On Tuesday, Aug. 29, at
approximately 6:35 am. Twas
on my daily commute to work
in Burnaby and was entering,
the Upper Levels highway at
the Capilano interchange.

1 was dressed for ny morn:
ing workout and cunning a lit-
de fate. An accident had just
occurred westbound on the
highway a little
Capilano Road.

There was smoke and
sparks coming from the strick-
en car and [saw two or three
men frantically trving to kick
in the passenger side window
to rescue the driver.

IT pulled over, turned on
my four-way flashers and
crossed the highway to see if 1
could lend any assistance.

When I arrived at the car,
the men had successfully bro-
ken the driver's side window
but were having difficulty
extracting the driver as he was
tightly gripping the steering
wheel and resisting their

efforts to save hint. ‘To make
things worse, there was a fire
immediately behind the driver
in the back seat producing
large amounts of smoke. At
least one of the rescuers was
coughing from the smoke.

I realized the victim could-
n't easily be removed through
the driver’s window so F went
to the passenger side. Both
front and rear doors were
locked. 1 attempted to kick in
the passenger side window.

Under another circum:
stance this would have been
comical. My first. kick pro-
duced no ¢ffect. My second
kick was made with much
more resolve. Unfortunately
my Reeboks did pretty much
what they were designed to
do, They absorbed most of the
shock of my kick and returned
a large rebounding energy to
me that resulted in my being
bounced back into the traffic
fane and almost on my back
with cartoon-like effect.
