Gilberto buitds bossa nova grooves .lahn Goodman This Week Editor Jgoodman@usnews.cont WITHOUT missing a beat, Bebel Gilberto updates the classic bossa nova sound on her bril- liant new CD Tanto Tempo. “L wanted to do something different with bossa nova and recycle the things that really inspire me,” says the daughter of Joao Gilberto and the singer Miucha. In the carly "60s her father created the sublime musical genre (with Antonio Carlos Jobim among others) that put Brazil at the top of the pop and jazz charts with songs like “Girl from Ipanema”. Gilberto’s childhood is the stuff of legend. She grew up in a house of music in Rio de Janciro, first appearing on stage with her moth- er and Stan Getz at New York’s Carnegie Hall. * And even though she made her recording debut 25 years ago at the age of seven, Tanto Tempo is her first full-length album. It was worth the wait. fabel Crammed’s Brazilian off- shoot Ziriguiboom, contains a mix of original material and classic songs from borsa nova’s heyday. The music, filtered through the knowing hands of producer Suba, updates the genre with subtle modern touches. “EI would never make something totally electronic,” says Gilberto, although work- ing with Suba and dance pro- ducers such as Washington, D.C."s Thievery Corporation, she is more than a little famil- iar with the techno world, “(Crammed) were pretty open minded about what I wanted to do. They were not demanding — they really trusted my feelings and they trust Seba — a guy that 1 really loved. I met him only two years before he died. Our friendship was short.” Suba, a Yugoslavian expatriate working in Brazil, tragically died in a fire last year as he was finishing production on the album. Most of the tracks were recorded with him in Sao Paulo and Rio. Gilberto wrote “Lonely” for him after his death and recorded the song with Thievery Corporation at Crammed’s studios in Brussels. Along with the new material Gilberto includes classics “but not the obvious ones”, Bossa nova has always had a modernist aspect to it and her cutting-edge crews give her that little extra push to find the right mix between the new and the old. Her ' passion is definitely there on the record, but on stage it’s explosive. Her recordings do whar they’re supposed to: they’re catchy enough to stick in your head, uplifting enough to raise your spirits and powerful enough to make you want to dance. Secing her live is all that, amplified. One of the most unique aspects of Kina’s music is ~ the way it defies categorization.
