Say amen somebody Godspeli at the Vogue SUNDAY Schoo! was never like this. Despite program and press notes to the contrary, it’s clear within the first few minutes of Uncle Randy Productions’ Godspell, that it has biblical lessons to teach. And while the trend for many theatre companies these days is to push the envelope with controversial content, language and dress, this production at the Vogue Theatre downtown almost seems a bigger risk. How will today’s audiences react to a musical presentation of the parables found in St. Matthew's Gospel? With great enthusiasm. Because no matter what your religion (or lack thereof), you can’t help but enjoy the energy and humor of this fast- paced musical. Nor can you fail to be impressed by the talented cast — from Janet Gigliotti’s smoky voice to the exceptional dancing of Jeni Kamo and Jana Burge; in fact, to the singing, dancing and act- ing ability of the whole bunch, it’s worth checking out. Even pianist. and = musical director Courtenay Ennis brings something extra to the show: impeccable comedic timing. Besides, the lessons are good ones: about turning the other cheek, loving your enemy, and che perils of greed — lessons that are all too easy to forget in the 90s. If there are any complaints to be made about Wednesday evening’s preview performance, they're minor: a few fumbled - lines and disney off -key notes — surprising, considering this is .the show’s second run.
