NORTH VANCOUVER Ci- ty’s Emerald Park Lodge is once again awaiting new te- nants. Offers for the landmark building, which was erected in 1904 by the city’s first solicitor, Sir Alfred St. George Hamersley, are being carefully studied by city staff. The city recently spent $8,000 weeding and cleaning up Emerald Park’s grounds in hopes of attrac- ting someone who will upgrade the stately lodge’s facilities and restore it to a fine dining establishment. The city leased out the lodge as a restaurant in 1981, but the reces- sion in the early 80s and delays in licensing killed the first restaurant operation in the lodge. New management resurrected the lodge restaurant in 1984, but again business died off and it went into receivership last May. But with the right operator, business will turn around, city land agent Don Stigson said recently. “It’s really a jewel,’’ he said of the lodge. refused TONS & TONS OF STUFF No reasonable offer Emerald Park was built atop two giant granite slabs in the mid- dle of park land at 350 East Se- cond St. by Hamersley, who mov- ed to Vancouver from England in 1888. He built the tudor-style manor to house family and friends while they were on North Shore hunting trips. “They used to row across the in- Jet, hunt, and then row’ back again,’’ Stigson said. Hamersley moved into the house, but then returned to England where he eventually died. His family sold the house in 1906, and it was converted into a private hospital during the First and Second World Wars. The lodge was later used as a boarding house, and then did a 20-year stint as a rest home. In order to retain the building as a heritage structure, the city ac- quired it in 1974 through a land exchange with a private developer. The city has completely cleared and fertilized the gardens and pruned the trees, but the lessee will have to do a lot of work to get the restaurant on its feet again, Stigson said.
