FEDERAL minister Lucienne Robillard faced a day of Martin opposition and protest rallies Friday as she touched ; erchi down in Vancouver for the kickoff of an eight-day, six- p city road trip to get public feedback on a controversial . report on immigration called Not Just Numbers. Some claim the consultants’ report signals a move by the fed- eral government to cur down immigration from Asia. Certainly the most controversial recommendations of the 172 contained in the brief are the two that suggest language skills in either English or French could be a pre-requisite for immigrant status and denying immigra- tion applications from those over 45 in age. The results of a new Decima poll reveal the silent majority of Canadians support language require- ments: 73% of 2,004 polled believe immigrants should speak English or French.
