New programs unveiled

TWO PROGRAMS to improve the
living conditions of low-income
Canadians were recently unveiled by
the Honorable David C. Dingwall,
Minister responsible for Canada
Mortgage and Housing Corporation
(CHMC).

The programs, which are part of the
Residential Rehabilitation Assistance
Program (RRAP), will provide assistance to
landlords to upgrade substandard rental and
rooming house units.

The 1994-95 $16 million budget for
these programs will be funded from within
the existing federal budget for social hous-
ing programs.

“These funds were generated from sav-

ings achieved through effective fiscal man-
agement.” Dingwall said. “The federal gov-
ernment is committed to nelping house all
Canadians.”

In addition, almost 600 more jobs will
be created by these programs.

This is in addition to the thousands
already created by the reinstatement of the
Homeowner and Disabled RRAP earlier
this year.

Since the termination of the Rental
RRAP in 1989, no program has been
specifically available to address the health
and safety hazards faced by low income
renters,

Rooming houses are recognized to be
the Jast, and often the only affordable, alter-
native to homelessness for many
Canadians.
