McCredie News Reporter A retired butcher, Chalmers spends much of his time in his woodworking shop in his West Vancouver home, amid the cedar shavings and sawdust that are the byproducts of his work. 44... his creations are as close to indestructible as toys come... ¥9 His latest project has been a labor of love, brought out by the spirit of Christmas. From ‘“‘seraps’? of wood that had accumulated in his shop, ~ Chalmers crafted 32 wooden cars — from roadsters to pickup trucks to sedans —— and donated them to the North Shore Christmas Bureau/West Vancouver Santa Claus Fund. ‘T have a friend with a couple of twin boys and | made them a few logging trucks that they really loved,’’ Chalmers said of his first foray into wooden vehicles. ‘‘! also made a few cars last year and dropped them off for the Christmas Bureau and Fireman's Fund.” This season, Chalmers hit upon the idea of challenging local home-based woodworkers to match, or exceed, the 32 toys he donated this year. “I thought the cars and trucks might be something that could catch the imagination of the North Shore residents who have hobby shops at home,’’ he said, adding that he knew of many such woodworkers. Adding that his creations are as close to indestructible as toys come, Chalmers believes the sim- plicity of their design appeals to both parents and kids.
