20 - Wednesday, June 12, 1991 - North Shore News Soapdish moves at a breakneck pace Soapdish *** (Paramount) Rated Mature (at the Esplanade, Van- couver Centre. Richmond, Station Square and Guildford Cinemas) ccording to my friend, Ancn, “The human race is faced with a cruel choice — work or daytime T.V.”’ But for real cruelty, try working on a soap. Just ask the current award-winning Queen of Misery, Celeste Talbert (Sally Field). Of course, she'll tell you the real drama is behind the tele- prompter. Celeste’s lover has just dumped her to go back to his wife in Pittsburgh, leaving her sobbing hysterically, ‘Pittsburgh! What does that tell you about the desir- ability of America’s Sweetheart?”’ Meanwhile, David Barnes (Robert Downey Jr.), the producer of The Sun Also Sets has got angst in his pants for the resident viper, Montana Moorehead (Cathy Moriarty). Together, they conspire to have the sun also set on Celeste’s ca- reer. Besides gearing the plot to have her murder a sweet-faced homeless woman (now, that’s cruel!}, they bring back Jeffery Anderson (Kevin Kline). Reprising his role of 20 years ago is a break for the ego-maniacal ac- tor who is currently consigned to dinner-theatre helt, playing Willie Loman at a Florida steak house for the aged. Head writer Rose Schwartz (Whoopi Goldberg) has the easy job, resurrecting a character who was decapitated. !t’s Celeste who has to share the camera with the Tim Bell FILM REVIEW man she personally had fired from the show two decades earlier, And worse, he’s got ey#s for her niece (Elizabeth Shue), the actress play- ing the comatose ceaf-mute. Am 1 going too fast here... well, don’t worry about the maze of subplots, because it's all in fun. And with this expert cast, there are lots of laughs. Sally Field and Kevin Kline are terrific as two of the most vain and insecure actors to ever light up a cathode ray tube. A few flat jokes aside, Robert Harling and Andrew Bergman hit their marks and even add a couple of surprise plot twists. Director Michael Hoffman keeps up a breakneck pace, with the actors speed talking and a hot mambo M UR DE 50% OFF ¢ Cy For the Do-it-Yourselfer Are you tired of cracking or peeling and leak- ing decks? Coronation Street **** (Granada Home Video) Unrated In the warld of soap aperas, this classic British import stands alone. For over 30 years the unglamorous exploits of the Manchester subur- banites have amused and enter- tained. Significant episodes have been transferred to video and all are worth a rental. Cf course, loyal viewers (or their VCR’s) are glued Monday through Wednesday at 2 p.m. to the CBC for current episodes. Among The Street addicts is Dustin Hoffman.
