MAILBOX Get mad at News staff Dear Editor: I used to find myself very angry reading columns by Doug Collins. However, it has become clear to me how inappropriate and misplaced this indignation is. He is merely the mouthpiece and convenient target for people’s anger which the rest of the staff and contributors hide behind. This all seems innocent and not too important in such a free country as Canada. It must have seemed the same to many people in Germany in the not so distant past. One thing we have all learned from that period is that when people don’t act, or even when people are passive in the face of bigotry and evil they are giving it a clear green light. Doug Collins is obvious and easy to deal with, but what about the rest of you? Each of you, in spite of your busy, everyday Canadian lives, cannot ignore the fact that you have to make decisions about what he is saying. I find myself in the odd position of having more respect for his honesty and bigotry than for your passivity. Joan Bitnum North Vancouver Collins a charity case? Dear Editor: I see that you have dusted off your old pal Doug Collins once more, and only you, Mr. Editor, will know why you must inflict this intellectual tragedy upon your readership with the persistency of rectal itching. Our Doug, it seems, is the self-anointed savior of the great 008000093008 white race — but next time uy shark liver oil, Doug, they say it reduces the swelling. Apart from providing your teadership with regularity, what could possibly be the purpose of your continued support for this Collins chap — is it charity, perhaps? R.
