From a huge youth event on Sunday, Jan. 13 te small in-home meetings, to a final gathering in the Centenniai Theatre on Sun- day, Jan. 20, several Christian churches of different denomina- tions are embarking on what's be- ing billed as A Celebration of Hope. It’s the inspiration of a group of about 15 Christian pastors who have met weekly for six years to pray for the North Shore. Cele- bration is the second phase of the well-attended Growthquake, a series of seminars on mobilizing Christians for action that took place in October. See . He believes, he says, in the use of reason in religion and having total respect for each person’s personality and individual beliefs. Green and his students never charge for their work, which, Green says, ‘*is very necessary in these days when there’s so much dodgy stuff done in the name of Christianity."’ There was once a time when “dodgy stuff"? was more than just a phrase to Green. As a teenager, Green says, ‘‘E was into mild ar- son. 1 was a pretty good little crook.”’ But he began to attend youth “ meetings where participants ‘‘were talking about Jesus as if he was a friend of theirs." After a year of skepticism, it suddenly occurred to him that “Jesus personally took the flak for my sins. It brought tears to my hard-boiled eyes.” Later, after achieving a first- class degree in history and philos- ophy at Oxford, Green began pondering his career choice and “increasingly the horrible convic- tion came that I should be or- dained."’ After attending Cambridge for a second degree, Green embarked upon an energetic career within the church that saw him become a A Tip this Christmas will go a long hree times a week, 52 revolutionary principal at the London College of Divinity, shocking the old guard by throw- ing open the college doors to women, non-Britons and laypeo- ple and instituting a less-hierar- chical power structure.
