Gasoline accidents
harm hundreds each year

START YOUR engines ... but
safely, please! Boats, motor bikes,
go-carts and other warm-weather
play equipment, as wel! as lawn
mowers and similar tools for
summer chores, are powered by
gasoline engines that must be used
carefully.

Sadly, every summer many
hundreds of Canadians forget how
serious gasoline is and suffer
painful, disfiguring injuries — or
are even killed — by their work
and play equipment.

Boys and young men between
the ages of nine and 35 are most
likely to be hurt in these acci-
dents. The District of North Van-
couver Fire Department wants you
to stay off that list.

Gasoline is a flammable liquid
that sends off vapors that can ex-
plode without your even knowing
they’re present. Gasoline vapors
are invisible and are heavier than
air, so they tend to flow. along the
ground, often far from their
source. If they find any heat
source, the vapors explode. Since

you can’t see them you have no
way of knowing where they go
until it’s too late.

So remember
safety precautions:

* Never smoke while using gas-
oline engines, especially when
fuelling.

*Shut down engines, motors
and all pumps, fans and heating
devices before fuelling. Always let
an engine cool down before
refuelling. Any source of heat can
set off a dangerous fire or explo-
sion.

© Always fuel engines outside.
Inside, the vapors will build up to
a dangerous point, especially if
you accidentally spill even a few
drops. Don’t fill a boat’s portable
fuel tanks inside the boat. Take
them ashore to fill and wipe off
any spillage before taking them
back on board.

bike, cart or mower at least 10
feet from where you filled it be-
fore you restart the engine. This
helps ensure you’re moved away
from the vapors that escaped
while you were filling the engine.
If fueling a boat, run the approv-
ed explosion-proof bilge fans for a
few moments to clear the fumes
from the area before starting the
engine. This way the sparks
created by starting the engine
won't trigger an explosion.

® Never use gasoline as a
cleaner, solvent or charcoal
lighter. Ut is explosive and you'll
get a fot more than you bargained
for. Use gasoline only for its in-
tended purpose: as a fuel for gas-
oline engines.

elf you have a gasoline fire,
don’t even try to fight it. Get
everyone away from it and call the
fire department immediately.

Some carpets can be cleaned at home

THE FOLLOWING are cleaning
tips from the Canadian Carpet In-
stitute:

Bathroom Mats: Bathroom
mats can be cleaned in your
washing machine (except those
mats cut from broadloom). The
secret to restoring the appearance
of these products is to wash them
in a neutral (mild) detergent and
tumble dry. Washing temperatures
for dark colors should not exceed
32°C. For whites and light colors,
temperature should not exceed
40°C. Set the dryer at the lowest
temperature.

Area and Accent Rugs: Com-
mercial rug cleaning companies
are best equipped to clean area
and accent rugs which can easily
be removed from the home,
cleaned and returned within a few
days. One should not attempt to
clean a hand-made rug at home.

shrink or decay. Even mold or
mildew that could grow around
them cannot harm the carpet and
are easily removed. For a
thorough overall cleaning, wash
the carpet with a good laundry
detergent.

and spread over the carpet with a
water can. Using either a scrub
brush or an electric rug sham-

ground the electrical appliances
