School seeks new home

WEST VANCOUVER Mortessori
School is having trouble finding a
new lecation, and its sroblem
could get worse now that other
preschools occupying school
district classrooms have been in-
formed that they may have to
make room for the 5€ ostimated
extra kindergarten students ex-
pected to cnter-<he school system
by September 1990.

The 25-year-old Montessori

school, for three to five-year-old
_ children, operated out of St. An-
thony’s School until 1986, when
they had to move to two rooms at
Westcot Elementary.

This spring, the West Vancouver
Schoo! Board gave the Montessori
Schooi three months in which to
vacate the premises.

Following an overflowing turn-
out of concerned parents to the
board meeting, two rooms were
made available at Cypress Park
Elementary —- but. just for the
1989-90 school year. .

Searching for a permanent Joca-
tion, the Montessori Schoci made
an offer to purchase municipal
land at Third Street an Inglewood
Avenue on which to build a per-
manent school.

SOLICITOR GENERAL Angus
Ree recently announced amend-
ments to the Motor Vehicle Act
that will introduce fines for ali
wioving traffic offences.

“It is clear that penalty points
alone are not enough to deter some

ie from unlawful driving ac-
tivities,’’ Ree said. ‘Fines establish
‘, clear link between the offence
and the pencity and provide 2
stronger deterreut to unscfe driv-
ing practices.’”

Fines will be the same as those
currently assessed against out of
province drivers. Offences such as
speeding, failing io. stop for a
school bus, prohibited U-turn and
unsafe lane changes will cost a
driver $75.

“The number of traffic acci-
dents in British Colurnbia is unac-
ceptable and we are taking strong
messures to curb the unnecessary
senseless tragedy caused by careless
driving,’’ Ree said.

The new fixes will aot replace
points which will continue io be
assigned as part of the Motor
Vehicle Branch criver improve-
iment program and as the basis for
the driver penalty point premium
system used by ICBC.

The traific fines system is ex-
pected to be in place by July i990.

“We have been consulting with

the UBCM (@Jnion of B.C. ~

Municipalities) and will be working
with them to monitor any addi-
tional costs incurred by the
municipalities,’ Ree said.

The introduction of traffic fines
is only one part of the overall traf-
fic safety program being undertak-
en by the Ministry of the Solicitor
General. The Traffic Safety Direc-
torate, established June 1 by the
Solicitor General, will be working
to develop other initiatives to im-
prove traffic safety in the pro-
vince.

assistance in looking at other op-
tions, including installing portables

In recent years the Montessori
School has been paying = premium

rental rate for rooms in local
schools because their program in-
cludes a kindergarten that com-
peres with the school district’s
kindergartens (and thus receives a
provincial government grant —
money that would otherwise come
to the district).

“But we are a well-established
preschool and we are even getting
support from parents who no
longer have children in our pro-
gram, but dun’t want to see us cui-
lapse,’’ Sue Kaffka of the
Montessori School said recently.
