High-carbohydrate foods get the bady going WRITING BOTH food and travel columns is an ideal combination. You won’t believe the input I get that reflects on both. For instance, last week 1 used information from the book Stress For Success by Dr. Peter Hanson (Harper and Collins) quoting him on ways to eat to eliminate some of the nasty side-effects of jet lag. beaters Barbara McCreadie But, the more I thought about it, the three symptoms mentioned, “fatigue, poor concentration and irritability” summed up the prob- lems many children face in the . classroom. Hey, don’t quit reading just because you don’t have any kids to worry about! The same thing is just as true in offices and house- holds. In short: We have two systems that regulate our activity — adre- nalin to get us moving and in- dolamtine to turn us down. Adrenalin is stimulated by high protein foods — meat, eggs, dairy products and beans. Indolamine is triggered by high-carbohydrate foods such as pasta, fruits, vegetables, breads and rich desserts. High protein meals can give us up to five hours of energy. High carbohydrate meals give us an hour of energy followed by a gen- eral slow-down, inducing sleep. I’m a total believer in the effect that diet has on our behavior. Here’s a personal example: For the past month I haven’t been cooking much. The spirit duesn’t move you when your house is in a total uproar (renovations still in process). I began to feef listiess. Energy? I'd forgotten what it feit like. Ambition? Spell that for me, Please. Finally, decided I’d better see a doctor or try some home remedies first. A daily vitamin pill propped me up to the extent that I guessed I might live. * By this time i had the sense to evaluate my diet and, as a former home economics teacher, I realized that I'd probably do just as well in a concentration camp. Just to refresh your memory, and mine, here’s what we ought to be eating every day: e Four servings of fruit and vegetables daily. Dark green, leafy or orange colored are the best. In- clude one serving of citrus. ® Enriched bread and cereals, four servings a day. One slice of 12- grain bread is considered a serving so base your judgement on that. @ Milk, includiz.g products such as cottage cheese, yogurt and butter- milk. Two glasses (or equivalent) for adults, four for teens and three for kids. ®@ Meat, esgs, beans, hard cheese, etc. Two servings. Get heavy- handed with the white chicken, fish and beans. Easy on the red meat. 46 - Wednesdzy, June 28, 1989 - North Shore News « Fat and sugar.
