By MICHAEL BECKER eee | Scott, the executive director for World Vision Canada, recently returned from the country, as massive flooding of the Ganges, Brahamaputra and Meghna rivers began to subside. While as much as a third of the flat country is flooded annually during the monsoon season, Scott said this year’s flooding was the worst on record. Estimates of outside food aid required for the country over the next 12 months total approximate- ly two million tonnes —- more than the quantity received by Ethiopia during its worst year of famine. Many homes still have locks on the doors, set by people fleeing the flood. But once inside, the beds, the clothing, the very walls are still soaking wet.”’ Scott said over 40 million people have been directly impacted by the flood. ‘‘They want to help themselves, but they don’t have the resources.”’ Scott vividly remembers the sight of 65,000 flood-entrapped Bangladeshis, many with animals, stranded on a 30-mile-long, 10 to 20-foot-wide embankment. World Vision currently sponsors 180 projects in Bangladesh and approximately 37,000 children. Four thousand of the children are supported by Canadian donors. The organization has been active in the country for 18 years. Among the many projects spon- sored by the aid group is a fishing boat building yard in Chittagong.
