Carson wrestlers strugg!

CARSON GRAHAM'S 45-man
wrestling team, ranked eighth in
B.C. and fresh from a fourth place
finish at the Port Moody Invita-
tional Jan. 9 and a fifth at the
Okanagan Invitational in
Kamloops Jan. 16, are looking to
improve their ninth place standings
in last year’s B.C. championships.

Basically a young team with a
great future, the Eagles are coach-
ed for the sixth year by veteran
Barry Callaghan, who had an
almost unbeatable team at New
Westminster for seven years, dur-
ing which time the Hyacks were

its upcoming-season.in February.

They are looking for dynamic,
enthusiastic .and creative in-
dividuals who. have Gymnastics
Coaching Level I and/or H with
experience.

Callaghan then moved to
Hamilton in 1975, started a pro-
gram that fed Carson Graham,
and moved to CG when Hamilton
closed in 1982. The Eagles were
third in 1983 and eighth in 1984,

“Times have changed,"’ says
Callaghan. ‘‘The coaching has im-
proved. There’s much more ad-
vanced technique by the kids much
earlier now than 10 to 15 years ago
.. and it’s showing in how we're
doing internationally.’’

Carson Graham’s best Grade 12

wrestlers are Warren Cannon, who
competes at 90 kilos this year after
finishing fifth in B.C. at 84k last
season, Vito Decotiis in 74k who
was fourth in the B.C.’s at 70k a
year ago; and Amir Asgari, who
wrestics in the 78k class.

Mamali Kazerouni, a graduate
of Balmoral's (three-year-old pro-
gram under former Carson
Graham wrestler lan McDonald, is
a Grade 1] student who placed
third in the 57k class at the
Okanagan meet.

The top Grade 10 matman is
Giutio Decotils at 70k, who took

third at the Port Moody meet and
was named outstanding junior
wrestler in the .Okanagan meet
when he came in fourth at Port
Moody and fifth at SFU. In 1987
he finished sixth in the B.C. 5!tk
event.

Other Grade 10 students are Jeff
Chalmers at 54k and Siamak
Zahedi at 55k. Both were fourth at
Port Moody. Up and comers are
