Vancouver joins culture committee WEST Vancouver . District Council voted Monday to participate in the North Shore Cultural Policy Committee. By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer “Up until now, we have been working in isolation,’’ said Ald. Pat Boname, who will represent district council on the committee. The committee is currently working on an inventory of cul- tural resources in che area, an im- portant step before West Van- couver embarks on the building of its own arts centre, Boname said. “This process will tell us what needs to be done. Who are’ we building this centre for? We have to be aware of what’s happening not only on the North Shore, but also in downtown Vancouver,’’ Boname later told the News. Boname felt West Van’s par- ticipation on the committee would save the district ‘‘a great deal of money on a similar feasibility study.”” Bob Kusch, assistant Parks and Recreation director, will work on the technical committee, and the Community Arts tounci! will also be asked to appoint a repre- sentative to the grcup. The district also agreed Monday to contribute $890 towards the printing of a publicity booklet. Boname went on to report on her May 22-23 attendance of the Canadian Conference of the Arts in Calgary. She was encouraged to help in the development of a “‘Ar- ticipation’” campaign to make art as much a part of every day life as Participation did for sport. “T strongly recommend we join North Vancouver City and District to develop a North Shore Cultural Policy. We need to allow ourselves to grow our own flowers in our gardens not just the seedlings of others,’’ Boname said.
