STEVE McMINN NV District Alderman “IT apply the same reasoning to Canadian in- volvement in Star Wars research as | clo to my daily involvement in society. That is, if something im- portant is going on, I want to be involved, so | can make changes to suit my needs rather than sit on the outside and become a vic- tim of someone else's deci- sion, “It would be naive to think the USSR is not also actively developing nuclear defensive and attack systems on the earth, sea andin space. Should we, as neighbors and allies of the other superpower, abandon the field to the United States, who wili proceed without us anyway, or do we join in the research and add some saner heads to the process? “I believe Canadians, 10 - Friday, March 29, 1985 ~ Narth Shore News and most Russians, would prefer that we spend our money on more humane and beneficial projects than a sophisticated and powerful defence/attack system. At the same time, the average Canadian is not party to the full diplomatic, technological and intelligence informa- tion which leads our gov- our needs ernment to make these global decisions. Remember just prior to the Second World War, the majority of Britons were in favor of making peace with Adolf Hitler - history has shown defence decisions cannot be made by refer- endum! “Ironically, the certainty of mutally assured destruc- tion is what keeps us from destroying the planet more surely than any fragile mutual ‘trust ever could. | have carried my son on my shoulders in the annual peace march in Vancouver. Our hopes obviously fie with his generation. “The conditions for our involvement in Stars Wars should be tough and must include a meaningful role in the shaping of the research program and in its deployment, particularly within our own bound- aries." ‘3s deals” OLGA KEMPO Cap College Instructor “My position on Stars Wars is I fear we'll be tied into the American in- dustrial military complex and that our sovereignty, by virtue of this tie-in, will be compromised. I think the costs in this Stars Wars § project will contribute to the economic problems of the world because as flows of capital go into the American Stars Wars pro- ject this tends to rob the entire world and we all suffer from it. “We've been hearing the Stars Wars project will give Canada research and jobs. | believe the kind of research that would be done in Canada would be of a very insignificant nature because the prime research would be done in the U.S, Our research con- tribution would be minimal and of no interest to our scientific community. And the consequence of even the spinoff effect of that research into our economy to the manufacturing sec- tor, would be at the nuts and bolts level. The so- called potential jobs would be something called blood money and blood jobs. | find this morally offensive to see my tax dollars and the intelligence and = the energy of this nation being used in this way. “I’m not sure the arms talks would be derailed by the Stars Wars program and that’s another danger. The world wants the talks to continue and I find it unreasonable on the part of the U.S. to push this at this time. “d think the message has been very clear to our gov- ernment that the ordinary Canadian does not want to be involved in Stars Wars. They did not want the testing of the cruise and we don’t seem to be able to get this message across. Whatever the mechanism is for getting that message acrass is not functioning.” bo ee ee ee ee eee, $3 off any large pizza & deliver - take out - dining in expires April 30/85 L 1. f + r A i fox a 1351 Lonsdale, North Van $85-5385 re i ee ee oe ee ee Sunday Brunch includes, assorted salad selection, ham. bacon, sausages. omelet- § 5 9 5 g tes, dry cereals, fresh fruit, hash browns, crepes, pancakes and more. 10:30 am to 2 pm (child portions available) 2 for | rib dinner BBQ rib dinners include salad bar, stuffed potatoe. ¢ Expires April 30/85, Delivery or dining in 95 - Non-stop - flights from Vancouver to London (Gatwick) and Glasgow (Prestwick) Airfare per person return May 7, 14, 21 & 28 departures & returns . on May 28 & June 4.
