Cll - Sunday, November 4, 1984 - North Shore News RE coranvee | | Se) | AA YORK’S FOR TOURISTS Book favorite B&Bs in advance HIS WAS Brian’s first visit to York and it has become one of his all-round favorite sities. A word to the wise — York, even in off-peak season is full of tourists. by Barbara McCreadie It's not a good idea to ar- rive without a B & B reserva- tion - we did, and were lucky to find a hotel at all. To make matters worse, they could on- ly take us for one night and we had to move the next day. Set us back £28, too! Mind you, the Lady Anne Middleton is quite nice - it has an excellent buffet breakfast with the only de- cent coffee | had the entire trip. It’s on Skidegate St. While we were there, -we made three excellent finds. First - the best fish and chips I've ever eaten. | can’t give you the name or address of the place - it’s just called Fish and Chips to the best of my knowledge. To find it, stand in front of the L.A. Van. eg Piysbies 4 ae alley until you come to the next street - look ahead of you and you'll see a big F & C sign. That's it! Can you belheve that they're so good that Brian and | pigged-out on three orders? And mushy peas - split peas cooked until mushy and stasoned with mint (or maybe sage). Try the Victoria Vaults Pub on Nunnery Lane. Be prepared - York pubs close after lunch and don’t open unul 6 p.m., the latest we found anywhere in England and Scotland. But the best find of all is a new restaurant, about a block from the pub, also on Nunnery Lane. Is this a suc- cess story' Four young graduates of a catering school - two married couples got together again and opened their dream restaurant. It has pone so departures: Fairsky - Sitmar Oct 31 Nov Fairsea - Sitmar Vt ery [CE aes Ds Y SL yorab ttapvert Cc cmrasealtaret well that you’ll never get in without a reservation - and it’s so new that it isn’t in the phonebook. It’s called ‘‘The Pines’’, then like an idiot, 1 didn’t ask for the phone number when we were there. We found The Pines while we were walking around waiting for the damn pub to open and were able to get a reser- vation for the next night. The food is great - and the prices incredible! We had two large vodka to start. Brian had Cock-O-Leekie soup and I tried the house pate. Then, along with an excellent bottle of red wine, Brian had rack of lamb (the biggest rack I’ve ever seen) and I had the seafood shell - prawns and scallops in wine sauce. We finished up with two coffee and kahlua instead of dessert. Total bill? Thirty- two dollars! I always hesitate to recom- mend restaurants in far-away places - unless you get there P.D.Q. any number of things can happen. If it’s a while before you’ll get to York, check and make sure the restaurant hasn’t changed hands - and check the prices on the menu in the window. | still can't believe $32. Since we had to move to another hotel the next day, we did a bit of searching and found a better - and cheaper place although £23 is almost double what we paid in most other places. The Priory ts at 126 Fulford and has the best beds we found anywhere and more bathrooms than you'll normally findina B&B Now, how about this fora comncidence? 1 always check Seaton Travel! At the Priory, | was waiting with the bags while Brian settled the account. While I waited | scanned the guest book - and found the names of a couple we've known almost all our lives - Brian and Jack went to school together in Victoria and Jacquie and | lived down the block from each other as kids in Medicine Hat. They were still in the hotel! We got together for half an hour’s chat. And it was a darn good thing for. Jack and Jacquie that we did - while we were chatting the upstairs maid came fiying downstairs with Jack’s money pouch - he’d forgotten it under his pillow. If we hadn’t been there, they’d have been long gone. One final ‘‘touristy’’ bit: Don’t miss the castle Museum. Although the building looks like a castle, it never was how about a prison? Anyway, the Museum depicts everyday life in York from about the 1700s - whole streets of shops and businesses have been moved inside the building. It features furnished rooms, complete in every detail from each period of history. There is also a debtor’s prison, a farming and crafts display, an entire wing devoted to the military (featuring the York Helmet | mentioned last col- FANTASTIC umn) and a display of costumes from each period in history. The 18th century adult clothes are so smali that they are displayed on pre- teen sized dummies. If you're bringing children to York, the Jorvik Viking Museum and the Castle Museum are particularly in- teresting for them. They are just a couple of blocks apart and you could easily visit the two in half a day. Two days in York ts the ab- solute minimum to plan.
