60 - Sunday, December 6, 1987 - North Shore News Humor softe MANY PEOPLE find it easier to say what’s on their mind when they wrap their messages in a smiiz, according to Lynda Marlow, a product supervisor at a Canadian greeting card company. “Humor is one of the fastest growing card categories in the greeting card industry,’’ Marlow says, ‘‘and humor is changing about as fast as it’s growing.”’ Today’s humor is sophisticated. Wit, puns and double entendre are popular, and women’s humor is being recognized as a genre unto itself, according to Marlow. Research indicates several reasons for the popularity of hu- morous cards: * Humor is a shared experience between two people — it does not need a holiday or special occasion as a reason to express friendship. * Younger adults in particular often use humorous cards to replace phone calls or letters, in part because it is sometimes dif- ficult for them to express ~ their personal feelings. e Humor can soften a serious message, and it allows the sender to show concern for another per- son without revealing the intensity of emotion. Marlow says the sender of a humorous card usually knows the recipient well enough to unders- tand the kind of humor that would be appropriate. “The nice thing about humor is that it allows you to share some- thing with another person in a light S ns message and friendly way,’’ Marlow said. “For example, to let someone know you want to hear from him or her, you might send the card that has the appearance of a gossipy tabloid.
