BS mailbox Public schools defended write to answer “Kathleen Swann” and her sweeping condemnation of our public school system. (Sunday News May Ist.) My husband and I are products of the extremely elitist, academic, English educational system which is, no doubt, the model for the “first rate private school” she has chosen. We also have children at the Grade 1! and pre-kindergarten stage, and are as happy with the public system as she is dis- illusioned. We may be unusually Why the seniors’ kitchen oversight? Dear Editor: I am a member of the West Vancouver Senior Ciuzens Activity Centre. A lucky in our local school, Cleveland, but I always find the atmosphere there bustling, industrious and happy. The staff are more interested in the children than most teachers I remember from my _ child- hood, and the children of all ages are polite and, much more importantly, articulate and involved. My daughter's reading, tested in Kin- dergarten, was judged to be at Grade 3 level. As in anything, “Mrs. Swann,” blanket generalizations tell us nothing, especially about individual children. They recent event has come to my attenoon and I am writing this open letter to your paper so that someone can answer On Mother’s ‘Day write to Yuri, Ron and Pierre Dear Editor: For Mother's Day -- give a gift to last. Act to save our planet and our children. For over twenty Mother's Days, Voice of Women has recalled the words of Julia Ward Howe written in 1893: “I drew up a document which implored women all over the world to awake to the knowledge of the sacred rights vested in them as mothers to protect the human life which cost them so many pangs. I had desired to institute a festval which should be observed = as Mother's Day, and which should be devoted to the advocacy of peace doc- trines.” How many more = ycars before our daughters can truly celebrate a peaceful Mother's Day with = their children? Let us use those sacred rights vested in us to protect human hfe by wnting our world leaders and im plonng them to. stop. the arms race now Our children must survive! The picture “Kathleen Swan” paints of our children, as idle insolent bullies, bears no relation to any of the children I know. Those of all ages, from Grade 1 to the young adults in Grade 12 and first year university, are all a credit to their parents, to their schools and to our com- munity. “Kathleen Swann's” ar- the question that I have on my mind. The Senior Citizens Centre has been accepted by Mayor Humphreys and council as being completed. Yet I understand that the North Shore Union Board of Health has been critical of the kitchen facilities, even before the centre was opened. The controversy centres around the use of two or- dinary kitchen stoves rather than a commercial range, a dish washer which is con- sidered too small, and electric outlets that will not accommodate two kettles at one time. I sin- cerely hope that she will not be disapppointed and that her children will be a credit to her also. We are all trying to do our best for our children, but hostility and negative propaganda from those in a financial position to opt out, can do nothing but harm to all our children. I sign myself proudly, by my real name, Patricia Savage North Vancouver These may seem to be small matters but I am curious to know why this oversight, which apparently is going to cost $27,400 to rectify, occurred in the first place. The municipality of West Vancouver has _ building inspectors and_ electrical inspectors and a committee in charge of the operation of the building, along with the paid staff in the building. No one seems to have detected this oversight before it occurred. Would somebody please tell me why it did occur? (Mr. )M.J.
