Council unanimously voted to allow a concession stand on Dundarave Beach to remain, despite the strong objections of neighboring residents. Dozens of letters and petitions containing more than 300 signatures were sent to council vehemently protesting a hot dog stand that they claimed would drastically change the quiet, unsullied nature of the beach. But a three year lease has been signed with the con- cession stand owner and council would be “adopting draconian action” by cancelling the contract, said Alderman Don Lanskail. So, while Lanskail, along with Alderman George Morfitt, was one of the strongest opponents to the stand originally, his only action “in the circumstances (was to) reluctantly accept the Parks and Recreation (Advisory Commission) recommendation.” Although the parks commission recognized that there is a “divided attitude” among West Van residents on the concession stand, it said there has been no demon- stration the stand has “had a measurably detrimental effect on Dundarave Park.” Council agreed with the comMmMission's recom- mendation that the stand be closely monitored. West Van_ resident Douglas Moss _ interrupted council “just when the gate (was) about to be shut.” With Aldermen Hutchinson, Lanskail and Morfitt op- posing the stand when it was first suggested, Moss -wondered who had voted in favor of the booth in the first place. “I haven't heard any (alderman) saying they're in favor (of the stand),” Moss said. According to Moss the debris and garbage from the stand is already noticeable. But Alderman John Hum- phries disagreed.
