A pilot project to explore the use of microcomputers in public classrooms will be implemented by the Ministry of Education in September. Education Minister Brian Smith announced today that 100 Apple I~ micro- computers will be installed in 12 school districts at a cost of approximately $200,000. Purpose of the pilot project is to obtain provincial information about the value of microcomputers as a teaching/learning aid for instruction, tutorials and enrichment, and to develop computer literacy among students — knowledge of how computers work and how they affect everyday living. School districts taking part in the pilot project are Kimberley, Castlegar, Vernon, Delta, Maple Ridge, Howe Sound, Peace River North, Greater Victoria, Nanaimo, Terrace, Richmond, and Penticton. The education minister said that the planned usage for the minicomputers would be 48 per cent in elementary schools, 31 per cent in junior secondary schools and 21- per cent in senior secondary. About 39 per cent of usage will be for tutorial and special education, 28 per cent for enrichment, and the remainder for general literacy and computer science studies. The Apple U micro computers are part of the newest generation of computers. They consist of a typewriter-like keyboard, a television screen to display words and pictures, and a memory. Members of the public will have an opportunity to see the microcomputers in operation at the Pacific National Exhibition. They will be demonstrated in a simulated classroom in the B.C. Building. part of an education exhibit sponsored jointly by the Ministry of Education and a numbcr of the province’s post- secondary institutions.
