AT-Wednesday, May 14, 1980 - North Shore News Open door immigration policy swamping white culture Dear Editor: I disagree with the letter, (Mailbox, May 4) which accuses Canadians of racial bigotry. The dictionary’s definition of a bigot is “a narrow-minded person, who is intolerant of other creeds, races, etc.” I don’t believe the average Canadian falls into that category. In fact, it would be almost impossible for a person to grow up im Canada, which has always been a virtual crucible for Dear Editor: Imagine, if you will, the outcry if every business that was going bankrupt put the bite on the taxpayer to pull their chestnuts out of the fire. Yet that is what the GVRD has done with the 3 cent per gallon tax on gasoline and a 61 cent tax on our electric bill to keep their antiquated, stinking gas- guzzling buses on the road. Where are all the dissenting voices m protest of this most colossal np-off ever perpetrated agamst a natve and gulbble pubhc. the world and feel that way about other races. However, when one sces noticeable minorities mushrooming, in many areas, into majorities, then it is fear, not bigotry which emerges. White Canadians feel threatened by this tremendous influx of Asians to their -shores. They're afraid that their own culture will not be able to survive an invasion of such gigantic proportions. Canada, The B.C. Tel wants to in- crease ils rates to keep them from going broke and I am sure our hearts bleed for them in their hour of need. Why not let them put a tax on T.V. watching to help them out? (Radios at one time had aie mandatory license fee). Or how about letting Chrysler Corp., who are going down the tube, stick us for a tax on the oil we use. Could not the Egg Marketing Board impose a tax on all eggs sold to help that biggest chicken shipper of all, “The Colonel” buy oil although always home to many races, was never- theless a sensibly balanced society, until Mr. Trudeaus’ “open door policy” disrupted this pleasant state of affairs and we've been swamped by ever increasing numbers — of Asians ever since. Under the circumstarices racial tensions are inevitable. Although disquieting, our plight is similar to that of Canada’s native peoples, over a to southern-fry his product? The list goes on and on, even to taxing the very air we breathe? Who and what 1s this GVRD to have such dic- tatorial powers? A petition with a few thousand names on it might make them sit up and take notice. Clip boards for signatures could be put up in gas stations. Anyone interested in such a project please contact me. Art Lewis 752 E. 6th North Vancouver 988-5053 ‘The Law Shoppe’ a ray of hope Dear Editor: 1 would to state my opinion on the Law Society's order to stop the use of the name “The Law Shoppe’ for the practice of Jack James. I know only too well how footweary a person can get looking for a decent lawyer for an honest and worthy cause. I know only too well how vague and smug some lawyers can be while siting behind thew desk giving you a cold appraisal look and being vague and sending you lengthy letters of confused, vague and useless content. while delaying painfully action The layman will go the the shoc shop to buy shoes. First of all they welcomed the white settlers and both races lived together in peace. However, as steadily escalating numbers of pioneers began arriving every day, the comfortable, livable balance was upset and the Indian began fighting for his survival. Well, we all know the end to that story, don’t we? D.C. Grey — North Vancouver Why don’t they tax the air? Will tax bill double by 1987 Dear Editor: | Your column “Focus” in the May 7th edition defends the 1980 West Vancouver tax budget and indicates that there was no opposition to it. Our association registered a complaint in writing on Feb. 12/80 which was completely ignored. We do not believe all the W.V. taxpayers are happy and satisfied with an 11% tax hike. If as stated the W.V. taxpayers -have shown they are in favour of retaining quality of life in W.V., how Many years would the mayor propose to justify an 11% increase? Keeping in mind that, at today’s rates, at an annual increase of 10% the individual tax bill would double in a little over 7 years.
