The Sugarland Express *& *& *& 4 (MCA/Universal Home Video) Rated M Before Speilberg hit the big time with man-eating sharks, two-fisted archeologists and cuddly extra- terrestrials, he made a road film based on a true story. Goldie Hawn stars as a desper- ate mother who springs her small- time crook of a husband (William Atherton} from a Texas jail. They head out to retrieve their baby from a foster home and, along the way, kidnap a state trooper (Michael Sachs). Of course, being Speilberg, the chase takes on mammoth propor- tions as the pursuing cop cars stretch over the distant horizon. The two leads are perfect as slightly simple ‘criminals’ whose worst crime was being overly dedicated parents. Ben Johnson adds craggy-faced warmth asa police captain reluctantly bound by law to capture a “couple of kids.” This fast- paced comedy/drama gives us what the recent Speilberg films haven't — realistic characters who instigate action, rather than big-name stars reacting to megabuck special effects.
