RICHARD Nell was a
busy man yesterday
morning.

He was at his Pemberton
Avenue. shop — California
Shutters and Shade — getting
ready to Joad a truck with dis-
plays and samples for the
drive over to BC Place.

From today until Sunday,
he and his son Paul will be
showing off their wares for
the thousands of visitors to
this year’s B.C. Home and
Garden Show.

They will be among 450
exhibitors explaining their
products io interested home-
owners.

According -to Nell,
California Shutters are not a
tough sell. He’d know — he’s
been in the business for 36
‘years, and came to Vancouver
from Eastern Canada to help

Paul with his fledgling ven-
ture. He’s not looking back.

“They're the most popular
window treatment on the
market — the Cadillac of win-
dow tueatments,” he said.
“People look to California
Shutters if they want to be in
voguc.”

These are not decorative
shutters stuck to the outside
of a home, bur fully operable
interior shutters.

Made from 100% wood,
they are an elegant alternative
to blinds.

They are also a more
expensive option.

“They are something that
will last a lifetime,” said Nell.
And, he added, unlike other
window treatments, the shut-
ters add resale value to a
home.

Windows covered by
California Shutters require no
other treatment, such as drap-
ing. The wood is double
hand-sanded between primer
coats, then custom painted to

the client's colour spec ifica-
tions. The end result is a
smooth, glass-like surface.

And, said Nell, should the
interior of the home get a
face-lift, the shutters can get a
new look too.

“Because it’s 100% wood,
we can take it right back
down to the wood and re-
paint. They're like brand-new
shutters. You can’t do that
with plastic blinds.”

The shutters come with
five different sizes of louvre
blades.

“If you have very large
windows and want more open
vision, you would use the 44-
inch louver blades.”

For heritage-style homes,
where being true to the orig-
inal design requires a much
smaller, closer style of shutter,
a LX-inch louvre blade is
available.

Most homeowners choose
something in between.

Contrary to their moniker,

name stuck fram the days
when the shutters were used
in Hollywood movies.

“In the scenes trom The
Godfather, in that room
where Marlon Brando had his
big pow-wows — those were
the smaller, heritage-style
shutters.”
