LISTENING to and reading the news these days, it

seems crime by our young people is spiralling out of con-

trol. And what’s being done about it? The Young

Offeriders Act states that young persons “should not in

all instances be held accountabie in the same manner or

suffér the same consequences for their behaviour as

M inguirin adults,” and so vouth under 18 who commit crimes are

reporter — tencing, and don’t suffer the embarrassment of having

their name made public. The theory seems sound — allow

our ‘teens to make mistakes while they’re young, and they may become responsible, pro-

ductive adults. But is it working? Or are young people learning how to manipulate the
Young Offenders Act and escape responsibility for their crimes?
