golf course to
open Oct. 7:

IN just five short days,
it will no longer be a
handicap to be a North
Shore golfer.

The — much-anticipated
Northlands Golf Course
opens at dawn next Monday,
teving up something of a rar-
iry on the North Shore —
public golf;

Despite numbers reported
to be as high as 10,000,
North Shore golfers who
can’t afford to pony up tens
of thousands of dollars to
join. Capilano Golf and
Country; Club or Seymour
Golf and Country Club are
left with just three options:
play Gleneagles Golf Course
in West Vancouver (if you’re
lucky enough co get a tee
time); play Seymour
(Monday and Fridays only,
and if you’re lucky enough
to get a tee time); or head
south over either of the
Burrard Inlet bridges in
search of a tee time.

public golfers will be pre-
sented with a fourth choice
— a remarkable course in a
remarkable setting.

Designed by Canadian
golf architect Les Furber, the
new North — Vancouver
District. municipal course
Promises to be one of the
most challenging — public
courses in. the Lower
Mainland. And for Furber, a
man who has designed high-
ly regarded courses through-
our Western Canada,
Northlands is one of his
favorites.

“IT think this one’s the
only course | can say that if J
had to do it over again I'd do
everything the same way,”
Furber said on Monday dur-
ing a preview round for jour-
nalists, district employces
and councillors.

An architect noted for
integrating natural features
into his courses, Furber liter-
ally had his hands full when
designing Northlands. :

Granite outcroppings,
towering trees and burbling
creeks define the 100-year-
old forest skirting Mount
Seymour. Furber used the
elements to give a distinct

obviously on Furber’s wave-
length whs a they penned the
new course’s slogan “Where
Nature is your playing part-
ner.”)

The signature hole — at
least on the front nine — is
the par-five number four, a
slight dogleg right. Halfway
along the 500-plus yard
uphill hole on the left is a
waterfall, and although it was
designed and built by some-
one other than Mother
Nature (Father Furber?), the
wet granite face looks and
sounds like it’s been there
since the Ice Age.

The finishing touches are
still being completed on the
front nine in anticipation of
Monday’s opening, includ-
ing filling the traps with
sand, As of Monday Furber
was still undecided as to how
the sand. from Harrison
would be transported on to
the site.

“It’s less. expensive than
we expected so we might be
able to use a helicopter to
bring it in,” he said, adding

that the damage done to the
course using trucks to haul in
sand often adds more work
to the total bill.

And speaking of the bill,
green fees at Northlands are
expected to be $15 for nine
holes.

A short session of council
with district staff last nighr
was expected to set the fee
for Monday’s opening.

District. planner Irwin
Torry savs the plan for the
winter for the front nine is to
wait and see what happens
with the weather.

If it’s a mild season the
course could stay open all
winter, much to the delight,
no doubt, of North Shore
golfers.
