Off-ramp alternatives Dear Editor: This summer coimmuters from the North Shore will face heavy traffic congestion as a result of repair and main- tenance to the Second Narrows Bridge. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the Ministry of Transportation and Highways has decided to close the Keith Road highway on-ramp.as well..The ministry notice to motorists ends with a gratu- itous “encouragement to use alternatives.” : Encouragement? I don’t really have a choice if I want to go to work, even if it takes an extra hour. ‘The two alternatives are ‘the Main Street on-ramp, ‘plready plugged up in rush- hour, and the Lynn Valley on- - ramp, dangerously short and onacurve, . 0: ; __~ However, if closure is the only. way, let me suggest that " the Keith Road off-ramp be” closed instead. Motorists affected should be “encouraged” to use the Main Street off-ramp, which is nice and long. Two safe right turns would take them to their destination with very lit- tle delay. This is a very rea- . sonable compromise. It would not disrupt rush hour traffic, _and should be tried first. Our black bear population is in. rapid decline because of legal hunting and the rampant poaching for gall bladders and other bear body parts. Please write, phone or fax your local MLA, asking that all bear hunting in B.C. be stopped, before it is too late and we lose all of our black bears. A.M.
