A -LIFELONG resident: of the
.Horseshoe Bay ‘area, Dan Sewell
took to the water early.

“At seven, he was scrubbing boats,
cleaning fish and giving information
on where the salmon were.

At 13, he took his work out to sea,
running his own charter business
aboard a 30-foot boat.

At 15, he earned his living under
the water, as a commercial diver, .

Now, he runs ‘the family’s °

“Horseshoe Bay business, Sewell's
Marina, which was founded by his
grandfather, Dan, and taken over by
his father, Tom.

Dan Sewell remains involved with
the ocean beyond running the marina:

He is an adviser in federal fisheries

management and fish habitat.
_ He's also giving back (o a fishery
that has been a big part of his life.

Sewell is the driving force behind
a salmon release program in
Horseshoe Bay that now ‘releases
30,000 coho and 100,000 vhinook a
year.

The program began in 1986.

Sewell said he watches Horseshoe
Bay struggling to retain its identity in
the face of more concrete being
poured and a lengthening tourist sea-
son that even extends to the winter

months now. . ;
