Further comment is needed to
the unsigned May {4 article on the
history of commuter train service on
the North Shore, and confusion
between Ambleside and Dundarave,
at the start of passenger train service
from the foot of Chesterfield
Avenue in North Vancouver and
West Vancouver on Jan. 1, 1914,

The initial schedule called for a
40-minute service out of North
Vancouver and Dundarave in the
rush hours of the morning and
evening., and an hourly service
between 10 in the morning and five
in the afternoon.

Cash fares from North
Vancouver were, to Capilano, five
cents; to }-Hth Street and Hollyburn,
10 cents; and to Dundarave, 15
cents,

A strip of 25 tickets, to 14th
-- Street, cost $1.90;

- $2.05, and to Dundarave, $2.50.

Very heavy rains through
Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 2 and 3,
1914, resulted in major flooding of
the North Shore watercourses, and
on the Sunday, the Pacific Great
Eastern trestle work near the mouth
of the Capilano River was partiy

A replacement trestle was sturted
on the Tuesday, when it was report-
ed that: “The trestle bridge will only
be temporary, as the railway compa-
ny intends building a steel span in
the summer when the water is
low... Service was resumed on Jan.
17, 1914."

More than 18 times, service on
this rail line was suspended because
of the failure o1 a series of replace-
ment bridges being washed out by
Capilano River floods.

Because of this experience, the
people of West Vancouver refused to
give up their municipally owned
ferry service through the First

Narrows to Vancouver, in spite of

great pressure from the provincial
government.

When the railway service was
suspended, motor vehicle and bus
iransportation was provided by the
railway company from the North
Vancouver ferry to West Vancouver.

West Vancouver residents devel- :

oped their own bus service to sup-
plement their ferry service. It divert-
ed passenger traffic from the rail-

way.
The construction of the railway
line between North Vancouver and
Whytecliff is regrettably typical of
the sorry history of political inter-
ference with the Pacific Great
Eastern, I was a major mistake, a
sop to local political pressure, and
completely insupportable from an
economic viewpoint.
