Dr. George MeKenna spoke
on the issue of school and
community working together

McKenna is the originator of

the. Prepatory School Model, an
education program that stresses
academic excellence, He started
the program while ke was principal
of George Washington High
School in South Central Los
Angeles,

He has been featured on the
CBS News, in Time and People
magazines and was the subject of a
self-tided television movie.

McKenna said non-violent
school systems that emphasize fuir-
ness and equality result in positive
changes within a community as a
whole.

He offered as proof his own
experience with the 1,700 all-black
student population al George
Washington high school.

“There are more gang members
in Los Angeles than there were sol-
diers in Somalia,” be told the
packed auditorium.

In four years, McKenna took a
school wracked with drugs, vio-
lence and low achievement, and
transformed it into a place where
80% of the graduates went on to
college.

He said school initiatives that
contribute to the success of stu-
dents include: peer counselling,
mandatory homework, reducing
student failure rate through com-
prehensive testing and inviting par-
ents into the school.

McKenna said having parents in
the hafls of bis schoo! did more ‘to
increase student safety than did the
deployment of armed guards.

He told the audience that he was
instrumental in establishing a law
in California that gave parents the
