there by cable car might be the
best part.

We waited for the cable car
with a young couple from Ger-
many and helped give directions
to a French couple who wanted to
drive over the Golden Gate
Bridge.

When the cable car came we
hung on tight, enjoying the pas-
sing parade of San Francisco’s
unique architecture and glimpses
of the approaching bay.

It might have been imagination,
but there seemed to be a
friendliness, a warmth, in the air,
and yes, the sun was shining, but
a true romantic would give the
credit to San Francisco.

As Alistair Cooke said — and
everyone who is anyone has said
something about the city — it is
the most individual and engaging
of American cities.
