back to life for less than $1,000.

“That’s $14,000 cheaper than
buying a new car, so it is the way
to go if you are happy with your
car except for its appearance.’’

That $1,000 would get ‘an
awful lot of work done for you,”
said Rogers. Although — studies
show that.consumers think a paint
job will cost about $1,500, a basic
job can run as tow as $500, and
“that would buy an excellent
paint job.’*

Rogers said he typically
recommends against changing the
color of a vehicle, but when cus-
tomers want a totally new look,
the new teal colors are the most
popular.

No matter what the color
choice, customers usually feel
good to see the new shine on their
old car,

‘It seems the uglier the car is
when it comes in, the happier they
are when it comes out. It’s almost
as good as having a new car.”’

Most paint jobs are done with
enamel paint, although newer
urethane paints last longer and
shiae better, said Rogers. Another
newer paint style requires a base
coat of color covered with a clear
finish, but although this creates a
very nice shine, most of their re-
quests for that style come from
people who already have it.

If they are color-matching a
small segment of a vehicle, the
same type of paint must be used
so it will match.

Sticking with the vehicle’s orig-
inal color has cost advantages
(they don’t have to paint the door
jambs, under the hood, and inside
the trunk) and esthetic advantages
(there is always evidence that the
vehicle has changed color).

“You can’t paint around the
engine and the wiring,’’ he said,
and a stone chip will allow the old
color to show through, and that
makes the car look bad.

“You just can’t drive a car
without getting chips in it, but the
one that hurts the most is the first
little flaw that shows up.”

Once the car leaves the paint
shop looking like new, Rogers has
a few recommendations for keep-
ing it that way.

Keep it out of the sun (some
paints have built-in sun screens,
but most paint will fade), keep it
clean (chemicals in the air along
with tree sap and bird droppings
are hard on paint), and keep it
waxed.

Wash it regularly with a good
automotive soap — soap designed
for cars is better for the paint, he
said, adding that automatic car

washes are also hard on the finish.

three times annually. Car wax
