A NORTH Shore bulk-
loading terminal has been
charged with two counts of
releasing industrial pollu-
tants into Burrard Inlet.

Vancouver Wharves Ltd.,
located at 1995 West Ist St. at the
foot of Capilano Road along the
North Vancouver waterfront, is
accused of exceeding allowable
waste discharges on <wo occasions
in April and July 1991.

The triai is scheduled to begin
on June 8 in Normh Vancouver
and is expected to last three days.

The 33-year-old private com-
pany could face a maximum fine
of $3 million, with an additional
penalty of up to one year in pris-
on if convicted.

Provincial environment ministry
enforcement supervisor Fred
Barnes said the charges against
Vancouver Wharves stem from ef-
fluents, including oil, grease and
dissolved iron with high pH levels,
that were alleged to have spilled
into Burrard inlet and killed area
aquatic life.

Barnes said the emissions oc-
curred when newly installed
treatment plants at Vancouver
Wharves broke dovn, allowing
the untreated effluents to enter
Burrard Inlet in amounts ex-
ceeding permitted levels.

“They were trying to get the
bugs out of it (new treatment
plants) when these sudden
breakdowns occurred,”’ Barnes
said.

The company was then cited on
the environment ministry’s public-
ly released poliuter’s list four
times during the past year.

Vancouver Wharves chief
operating officer John Mackay
said company officials were
“dismayed’’ at being charger
while installing the new $3 million
treatment plants.
