§6 - Friday, November 15, REAL 1991 - North Snore News ESTATE Free public workshop offered on finding affordable housing MANY NORTH Shore res- idents face the challenge of finding decent and afford- able housing. They may find their homes too expensive, too crowded, excessively noisy or run-down, or all of the above. A shortage of adequate housing means that the market is competitive and breaking. into the com- petitive market requires some skills. To assist people in getting these skills, North Shore Community Services (NSCS) is presenting a free public workshop entitled ‘Finding a Place to Live: The Steps and Skilis.”” The aim of the workshop is to focus on a problem- solving process of address- ing housing issues, practise some skills and techniques and share creative solutions. Anyone looking for more affordable housing including families, single parents, stu- dents, seniors and single people should benefit from the session. Kathy Dornan, the workshop facilitator, sug- gests that people take the time to define their housing problem. ‘‘That may seem obvious,’’ she says, ‘‘but I mean coming up with a clear and specific goal, such as: ‘! need to find a spacious two-bedroom apartment within the ext six months,’ cr ‘I need to reduce my housing costs by $300 per month as soon as possible.’ This way people can get a ciear idea in their minds about what steps they have to take to reach their goal.”” Dornan adds that a long- Tange approach to finding good housing is best, because it does allow one to research and plan. She en- courages people to try to avoid a crisis situation if at all possible. “If you’re expecting a reduction in income, 2n in- crease in rent, the end of a relationship, or anything else that will affect your housing needs, don’t wait until the last minute to begin looking. Recognizing that the housing market is tight, we need to act as soon as we can.”” Sometimes there are the inevitable crisis situations like sudden eviction or job loss. These predicaments demand immediate action, and workshop attendants will discuss various options such as sharing accom- modation cr social housing. “Unfortunately, finding a suitable place on short notice is hard and people often end up in an un- suitable situation because there wasn’t the time to sulve the problem proper- ly,”’ adds Dornan. Also on hand at the workshop will be Daphne Morrison, who is a legal in- formation counsellor with NSCS. She will provide an- swers to legal questions re- garding landlord and tenant disputes and other tenant concems. The workshop will be presented on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 220 West 8th St., North Vancouver. Copies of the new brochure Finding a Place to Live: The Steps and Skills will be available at the ses- sion or by calling NSCS. It leads people through the steps of planning their hous- ing move and provides in- . § forniation and skills for ac- tually finding and getting a place. Dornan recognizes ihe challenge of finding a good place to live and encourages people to be good to themselves when facing a housing protiem. “It can be overwhelming. Moving is considered the second highest cause for stress, next to the death of a loved one. People need to find, attain support and de- velop skills to get then through it.’’ she says. Funding for the workshop presentation has been pro- vided by the City of North Vancouver and the Finding a Place to Live brochure is funded by the District of North Vancouver North Shore Community Services is a United Way member agency.
