Artworks teen danc Last week Zap asked you if 16-year-olds should be allowed to vote. There were quite a few calls and the balance came up as 60% against giving the vote to 16-year-olds and 40% for it. I don’t agree. Rosemary Johnsen of Art- works: The Event says posters publicizing the North Van District Centennial-sponsored event are being posted in the 11 different North Shore high schools. Five hundred tickets are available to the ‘‘dry’’ dance which will be held in the gym- nasium of RecCentre Delbrook, 600 W. Queens, North Vancouver and will feature a music video wall show. If the event proves popular, dances could be held every six weeks. Johnsen says the eventual goal of Artworks: The Event is 10 organize an annual youth acts festival that would include performances as weil as profes- sionally-taught performing arts workshops in the schools. Tickets to the Friday, Oct. 4 dance, which runs from 8:15 to 11:30 p.m., cost $6 in advance, $7 at the door. CBC focuses on youth FROM TOMORROW until Oct. 6, CBC radio becomes ‘‘Young People’s Radio.”’ The network is devoting one week to look at the issues and adventures faced by young people today. When I look back at it now I realize that it was actually not a bad movie. But that had to do with the fact that I was critical ~nough and aware enough to see its downfalls. The main one is its incredible violence. Of course, anyone seeing Terminator 2 should expect that. ! guess it was the squeals of delight from the four-year-old boy behind me that I found disturbing. Responsible parents? I think not. The underlying thing, though, was the pure escapism that the movie offered and forced upon the viewer. In a time where violence is more and more portrayed as a spectacle, simply something to be entertain- ed by, I found this to be scary. The movie stuck the viewer in the middle of this fast-paced action and senseless killing. By doing so one was de-sensitized and actually entertained by ail the destruction. Another case in point: the Gulf War. A war where not a single American casualty was displayed in the media. A war where ‘“‘the enemy’’ was not human but sim- ply a blip on the radar screen. Kenny. Terminator 2: scary escapism The same sort of downplaying of violence occurred at the PNE this summer where one shooting gallery at the midway offered a live target to practice your skills on.
