18 - Friday, January 25, 1991 - North Shore News HOME & GARI Be patient: blue boxes will be picked up CONCERNED RECYCLERS have been in a flurry wondering why their blue box pick-up has been spotiy of late. In a nutshell: Delays have resulted from snowy weather and p high volumes. If your box isn’t egay picked up, leave it at the curb and a it should be collected the next Trendell Whittaker day. If it’s not, call 929-3416. And above all — for heaven’s a : sake —- don’t panic. Sources say our program has been receiving very few complaints compared with other municipalities, and that these current delays are only tem- porary However; if the situation still has you feeling tense and uptight, read on for a remedy. Put on some background music, get your fingers snapping and boogey to the beat of the following recyclers’ ballad: ECOINFO SINGIN’ THE BLUE BOX BLUES Some of you have called To tell us that once again You've had to leave your recyclables Sitting overnight in the rain. Your cans were rinsed and flattened; Ycur bottles were residue-free But after you put your box at the curb Wary a recycler did you see. Ail day you searched for the collection truck But your fervent hopes were in vain So you consulted with your neighbors And thought it best to phone and complain. But take heart, dear reader, for rest assured IPI is doing the best it can They're working flat out, seven days a week, To the very last woman and man. The weather, you see, threw a spanner in the works, (You will understand that, I know) Now IPI is trying to make up The time it lost ie the snow. Blue boxes are now so full (hip hooray!) That the trucks reach capacity tout de suite And they have to unload them so often, sometimes There's no time left to visit your street. The North Shore is certainly not struggling alone; Other communities are in the same fix But if you have questions, here’s the number to call: 929-3416. But hefore you adopt a bullying tone There is one more thing to remember: The service is new, not yet tried and true, Having just been launched in September. So please don’t fly off the handle; The job won’t get done any faster Just console yourself with the comforting thought That patience is a good skill to master, * Bookcases * Buffets * Entertainment Centres * Bedroom Furniture * All types of finishes TM Woodthings 188 Pemberton Ave. North Van. 986-2742 _ Industry turns on to efficient lights B.C. HYDRO'S Power Smart energy conservation program and efforts by manufacturers have caused a big jump in demand for energy-efficient lighting products. Last year a rebate campaign was launched to make the 34-wait fluorescent tube the light of choice in office buiidings dominated by 40 watt tubes. Now the lower powered tube has taken 40 per cent of the mar- ket. Owen Stevens, program manag- er, says ‘‘That’s up from a pre- Power Smart ievel of about 15 per cent. Much credit can go to man- ufacturers. Phillips and Sylvania have thrown in their support by putting Power Smart labels on the product. GE has put it on the packaging.”’ The B.C. fluorescent tube mar- ket turns over 5,000,000 units a year. The tubes have a life span of about four years. “So with 40 per cent of the replacement market now, you can see it won’t be long before the energy-efficient product will dom- inate the market, thus providing very substantial energy savings. In fact, a near complete switchover would provide enough power for 40,000 homes.”’ Stevens also pointed out that the pre-Christmas compact fluorescent promotion was a big success and had helped boost de- mand for compact fluorescent lights. “The public has accepted these lights. They save as much as 70 per cent on lighting costs and the new generation of designs look very attractive whether used with table top lamps or as pot lights. Before Power Smart there was virtually no demand for them.’’ The Power Smart campaign is recognized as one of the most progressive cf its kind in North America. " SHIFISMOOUG. “YOUR SHELVING .
