ied 18 - Friday, July 7, 1989 - North Shore News THE VOICE OF NORTH AND WEST VANCOUVER 7 ad WEDNESDAY ° FRIDAY a a eT REDUCED WIND NOISE Styling contributes to Prelude fuel efficiency THE 1989 Honda Prelude sports models offer the all-round per- formance, advanced automotive engineering and sporty style that have made Honda a ieader in this very competitive segment of the Canadian automotive industry. For 1989, the Prelude is offered in two versions: S and Si. The Si is available with Honda's steer-angle dependent, four-wheel steering (4WS) option. All of the new Preludes feature four-wheel, uouble-wishbone suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars for improved ride ang handling, four-wheel disc orakes with ventilated front rotors, variable-assist power rack-and- pinion steering, and an availadle electronically-controlled dual mode automatic transmission. The Prelude's efficient aerody- namics — the coefficient of drag is only 0.34 — contributes to fuel ef- ficiency and reduced wind noise. The front double-wishbone suspension design allows for a low hoodline — the lowest of any front-wheel-drive automobile — and alsc ensures improved han- dling and ride. The low hoodline, in turn, aliows for both aerodynamic effi- ciency and improved forward visibility. Near-flush mounted glass, « carefully designed front air dam, and close attention to under- body design also help the Prelude cut smoothly through the air. Narrow, but extremely strong A-B- and C-pillars combine with the low cowl line to give Honda’s 1989 Prelude excellent outward visibiity and a comfortable, airy interior. The Prelude S model is powered SOHC POWERED by 2 2.0-litre, SOHC 12-valve engine with cua! side-draft, cons- tant velocity carburetors. The aluminum alloy engine provides 104 horsepower — 105 hp on automatic transmission models — for smooth, balanced perfor- mance. aike all Prelude models, the S version is equipped with a smooth-shifting, five-speed manual transmission; a four-speed, elec- tronically-controlled automatic transmission with lock::p torque EALER SHOW a aS Banal converter and driver select Sport mode is available. For 1989, cruise control and body-colored bumpers are now standard features on the Prelude 5S. Other standard features include a power-operated, tinted glass sunroof with sunshade, adjustable steering columr, quartz digital cleck, and dual remote door mir- rors. Comfort and convenience features on the new Prelude in- clude an AM/FM High Power ¢lectronically-tuned stereo casselie system with four speakers, automatic power antenna, fold- down rear seatback with lock, and remote trunk and fuel filler door releases. The new Preiude Si model spotlights more advanced perfor- mance features, including a 2.0- litre, twin-cam 1[6-valve engine managed by Honda’s race-derived multi-point Programmed Fuel In- jection system (PGM-FI). A dual. stage intake manifold maximizes the low-end, mid-range torque while at the same time retaining excellent high-rpm output, giving this 125-horsepower engine ex- a wish bs bata pa a 1989 Honda Prelude S cellent response, The handling is enhanced by 195/60 R14 Michetin tires on 14- inch wheels, with gas-pressurized shock absorbers both front and rear. Added features that core as standard equipment of the 1989 EXTRAS ADDED Prelude St include dual-outlet ex- haust, power windows and power adjustable outside mirrers, in- vegrated fog Jights, a driver's seat with adjustable lumbar and upper side bolster support plus an ad- justable seat back with a memory feature, and an ignition switch light and driver's door lock light. An AM/FM High Power elec- tronically-tuned stereo with cassette and four speakers comes complete with the new Si model. Last year, the top-of-line Prelude mode! offered an in- novative and widely-publicized 4WS option, giving Prelude the distinction of being the first pro- duction car with a four-wnel steering system. The Pretude Si with 4WS system offers its unique a PEt co Photo submitted /4WS benefits again this year, with the 4WS option package being further enhanced with the addition of a rear spoiler with LED high-mount brake ight) and unique alloy wheels. Honda's four-wheel steering system is mechanical in nature, and is controlled by steering wheel input. In driving manoeuvres with fow steering input —- such as wide, gradual turns or lane changes —~ the rear wheels turn slightly in the same direction as the front wheels for improved vehicle control and directions! stability. In) manoeuvres with greater steering input — such as sharp, low-speed turns, U-turns, or dif- ficult parking situations — the rear wheels turn up to five degrees in the opposite direction of the front wheels, thereby reducing the turn- ing radius of the vehicle and im- proving manoeuvrability. Other features offered with the Prelude Si with 4WS option in- clude bronze-tinted glass and power door locks. See Prelude Page 20 a
