BAND bites the bullet; Boston band bites the brain; Donny bites anyone he can to prove he’s not a wimp. ** Concrete Blonde — Free, IRS Records 1989 When tough-tongued Johnette Napolitano tosses off profundities like “God is a bullet, have mercy on us everyone” you just know that this band isn’t trading in the usual half-baked escapist pap pawned off on the pop populace in these dissonant and desperate days. God Is A Bullet is hands down, the best musical lambasting of that good ol’ z, °-toting society down south sinc = :-nnon struck with Happiness .2 A Warm Gun back in the dying days of the Beatles. Concrete Blonde is an L.A.- based unit. T’-e band looks road hardened — all tattooed skin (not those cute little ones you can get with some bubble gum packs — ooh so dangerous), stringy unkempt hair (not the teased rocker bouffants favored by some heavy-metal poodles), and sallow complexions (the true physical et- chings of rock ‘n’ roll dues duly paid). Boston’s Pixies will either cuff you on the head and have you high- tailing it away from your speakers in disgust or the listening experi- ence will be something utterly subversive — each offering the singular basis for a full-blown psychotic reaction of a technicolor nightmare. Black Francis (aka Charles Thompson IV), a dropped-out an- thropology major who looks more like a cherubic truck driver than the troubled man responsible for the acidic screams and misan- thropic lyrics at the core of this MOUNTAIN release, is a rare original. The unexpected photo art and lyric booklet accompanying the disc is a twisted montage of organic fragments (teeth, bones, bellies, innards) obsessively jux- taposed with weathered, found objects. : The songs, carried on a wave of ‘60s surfer guitars and circa ’70s punk mayhem, lurch from harsh ravers, like Debaser and the obscure Crackity Jones, to outright dangerous bursts of spleen ven- ting, Tame and Dead, Pixies are a crafty pack of primal fear-mongering misfits. There is a place for such go-go ghouls in the world. ** Donny Osmond, Capitol Re- cords 1989 Ach, Donny laddie, where have you been? And what have you gone and done? First Marie goes bad, what with the divorce and all, and new you! We do not need another George Michael. The young libidinous and swooning masses have enough to contend with from Mr. Michael, he of den- tal perfection and chronic facial stubble. And well, Julio has the matron set all wrapped up.
