We would like to comment on
some statements in Doug Collins’
columo of Sunday, Jan. 22 on the
issue of North Vancouver District
Council voting against giving
money tc the Nuclear Weapons
Free Zone Committee.

First, North Vancouver District
voted against a budget of $3,250

* not $6,500.

Second, the politicians in the
North Vancouver District Council
went along with a referendum in

* 1982 in which over 90 per cent of
the voters approved the declaration
of the district as a Nuclear
Weapons Free Zone -— some
pressure group.

Third, the legat opinion stated
that the district could not be
challenged for approving a small
budget in this area.

Fourth, are municipal councils
to be relegated to being dispasers
of garbage and sewage and
repairers of roads? Surely the role
of a municipality, which represents
the electorate at the first level of
government in Canada, should ex-
tend beyond these fundamental
functions and include the stating
of policies which involve the safety
of all the people of Canada and of
the world.
