oo ‘ 16 — Friday, March 17, 1989 - North Shore News Try unusual bulbs in the garden BY NOW seed and bulb catalogues have arrived at homes across the country and it’s time to plan the summer garden. This year, make sure that in- cludes summer-flowering bulbs. You may want to try some that can be started indoors. Tuberous Begonias certainly fall into this category — large and small flowered varieties and hang- ing basket (or pendula) types. They are well known and easy to prepare. Just place the tubers in pots of ordinary potting soil and give them a lot of light. Keep the temperature as close to 15 to 20C as possible. When the weather warms up and the leaves begin to grow, move the Begonias to a balcony, patio or in- to the garden. (Remember, plant Begonia tubers with the rough, concave side up and the smooth, rounded side down.) However, lots of other sum- mer-flowering bulbs can be started indoors, toc. In fact, some do best if pot bound and so can be moved into the garden still in the con- tainer. This makes it simple to pick them up again in the fall and bring them indoors for either continued bloom or dormancy, depending on the bulb’s requirements. Agapanthus, for instance, does best when pot bound and prefers to be moved to the garden or patio in a container. Called Lily-of- the-Nile, Agapanthus is a regal looking flower, standing about one metre tall bearing dense blossoms (white or light- to dark-blue) on long stems. After several years in the same tubs they need to be well fertilized. Others to start indoors include flower, resembling an orchid in form and texture, oa a 30 cm (12 in.) stem. A close relative of Hippeastrum, it makes an excellent container plant or may be planted in the spr- ing, about 10 cm (4 in.) deep, 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 in.) apart. Let it go dry after flowering; store the bulb in a cool, dry spot in sand, sawdust cr peat moss over the wintes. Gloriosa rothschildiana flower has dramatic crimson petals with a yellow base and border and @ tendency to grow like a vine, generally reaching a height of 1% to 3% metres. Plant the finger-like tubers horizontally, one centimetre deep, outdoors after the last frost cr indoors any time of year, al- though spring is best. For a tong span of summer bloom outdoors, start them inside in late winter and transplant. After blooming, gradually cease water- ing, then dig and store them dry for about six months or leave in pots of dry soil until spring and repot in fresh soil. Calla, more properly called Zantedeschia, is an exotic looking piant with a sheath-like flower — white, yellow or pink — that is almost too perfect to be real. I can be grown in pots or lifted from the garden in fall. During flowering, they need ample water and a sunny, sheltered spot. In the colder parts of the country, for example, planting Calla against a warm, southern wail will improve results. Canna, too, prefers a warm, sunny spot. This tuberous plant makes a fine display, with foliage that is nearly as dramatic as its flowers.
