Nenenapcate 18 - Friday, February 3, 1989 - North Shore News LIFESTYLES# Carpet color creates mood in the home COLOR IS everywhere. It is used to excite, soothe, daz- zle and impress us in our private and public lives. Consumers are becoming quite sophisticated in us- ing color to create a specific at- mosphere in their home environ- ment — one that’s flexible, func- tional and fashionable enough to fit their families’ tastes, interests and lifestyle. And they are receiving a lot of help from manufacturers of a variety of home products. Utiliza- tion of color for dramatic impact is now evident in wallcoverings, bed and table linens, major ap- pliances and plumbing fixtures. Experts now say color is no longer just an accent in accessories to perk up safe but boring neutrals. When it comes to decorating, carpet is the foundation for any decorating scheme. The floor is the fifth wall of a room that unifies the other design elements. For example, wall-to-wall carpet lends itself to expand the space of ‘a room. A continuous sweep of color, especially a light color, fools the eye into seeing more floor area than really exists. Or larger rooms can seem more intimate with a rich, deep color carpet. Carpet designers and colorists monitor a wide range of fashion and color trends. Forecasting and planning for the long term requires careful monitoring of apparel col- or trends. For example, mauves and berry coiors, so popular in the home to- day emerged in the apparel in- dustry a year or two before they moved into interior home fashions. Short term planning requires com- patibility with colors in other home textile products: upholstery, bed and bath linens, drapery fabrics as well as wallcoverings and interior paints. This ensures that when you’re decorating or redecorating, you can easily coordinate colors with a variety of carpet styles and fibres. Whar’s happening with carpet colors today? Overall, the color palette is getting purer, cleaner and brighter with a warming yellow in- fluence. There will be more soft, subdued colors and many that would have been unheard of even three years ago. Here are a couple of the more prominent color trends and some examples of how current colors may change. Those soft pastel colors — dusty mauves, corals, peaches and aquas — will become softer and cleaner in tones of warm pink, celery green, topaz yellow and soft blue. Today’s jewel tones — rich ruby reds, sapphire blues and emerald greens — will take on the rich bronzed tones of cinnabar, chestnut and eggplant. And current neutrals — those cool whites, greys and browns — will appear warmer in hues of khaki, toasty beige, warm grey, pale cream and blush white. While you may have a particular color in mind, for your ultimate satisfaction the Canadian Carpet Institute recommends that you consider how well that color will perform relative to your lifestyle. Much of the soil that accumulates on carpet comes from surrounding uncarpeted areas. For example, the rich, deeper shades of brown, blue, green and ted are wise choices for areas where soil is dark. But these colors tend.to show lint and dust or wax from hard surface floors more than light colors. Tweeds, tone-on-tones and peb- bled textures are very effective in hiding dirt. Patterned designs disguise spots and stains better than solid colors and are wise choices for kitchens or other areas where frequent spills are likely to occur. Color lends personality. For in- stance, the right color carpet can change the feeling of the room space. A room that lacks natural light can be warmed by sunny, bright yellows, oranges or reds. Cool colors, such as blues and greens, can create a serene feeling in a too-bright room. Vibrant, lively colors are good for family rooms or kitchens. And more formal rooms wil] be flat- tered with elegant palettes of pastels or old world colors of tradition. A cautionary note though. A sample that looks one color in the store may appear completely dif- ferent in your room. Colors tend to be ‘‘greyed”’ by artificial light. Also, because a floor is a large area, a whole floor of carpet will intensify the color, making it seem darker than the small sample. Therefore, you may wish to select a carpet color a shade lighter to compensate for this. Lighter colors are selling well today. The new generation of fibres with built-in stain, soil and Static resistance make carpet care easier than ever before and make lighter color selections more prac- tical. Thus, consumers have many more options in color selection. | CAN YOU CUT IT? ~~ JF * KNIVES 3.00 ¢ SCISSCRS2.50 .° KNIVES 4/9.00 ¢ PINK SHEARS 3.00 © SKATES 3.00 1 © complete sharpening sarvice Authorized dealer for. 203 EAST 1ST ST, N.VAN. 986-2516 “-¥OQUR LANDSCAPE SUPPLY STORE!! ‘+ February Pot EVERY CLAY, WOODEN AND TERRA COTTA POT IN STOCK!
