Owners Eric and Sandra LaBute have installed, in pink and blue pastel tones, some Torontonian snap and pizzaz into what was The Grape _ Escape, an unsuccessful wine and pun bar. Still awaiting such final -touches as color coordinated crockery and custom designed chairs, ‘complete with the Whatsamacallits saxophone logo built into their backs, the restaurant manages to mix a light and concise menu with traffic on both First and Second Narrows Bridges. He also plans to turn bhat- sumacallits’ vault (the building was originally a bank in the 1920s) inte an impenetrable retreat for those customers seeking the ultimate in dining table hopping ‘light and concise jazz. Eric LaBute has the manner and air of Torontonian con- fidence and marketing flare. Among plans to promote his restaurant, lie says, is to dispatch a sandwich board- equipped saxophone player to serenade mosning rush hour «sweet. smell of success for deadpan fun- nyman Woody Allen. — A | By COLIN LAMONT | Allen, the balding, bespec- tacled Jewish comic, stepped off the screen and behind the camera to write and direct this latest comic epic. Halfway through the picture Baxter turns away from the script and towards Cecilia, ‘You. must really like this picture!’’ he tells her. Then to a_ shocked Cecilia’s amazement, he climbs out of the picture and into her life. Leaving the black and white images of 1930 movies, Baxter comes alive in a color- ful real world where he in- tends to stay. Not intent to tacle, director Allen then turns his other black and white characters on the au- dience in the theatre, who de- mand their money back after Baxter leaves. Consequently, Whatsamacailits’ wine list is still in a free form, experimen- tal state awaiting proper assessment of local preferences. In hopes of in- fluencing these preferences and in hopes of expanding North Shore beer con- sciousness, LaBute will soon be introducing, via What- samacallits, two popular Toronto brews, Amstel and Grizzly Bear lagers. Consistent with its breezy uptown atmosphere, What- samacallits features a selection of nine appetizers from Chicken Wings ‘New York Style’ ($2.50 per serving of four, though on Friday nighi they were only 25¢ each) to Deep Fried Prawns ($2.95) to a Jazz Club Tray of' assorted cheese, fruit, and pate ($3.95), There are also four salads and two soups. Back at the theatre, the manager calls Hollywood and begs the film's producer Raoul Hirsch to capture the - character that has left the screen. Hirsch, the ever im- patient movie mogul, sends the actor Gil Sheperd (Jeff Daniels) who played Tom to retrieve his character. Gil is shocked that just as his career is taking off, an er- rant character. of his would spoil it for him. Flying to New Jersey, he confronts his character and orders him back onto the screen, but to ro avail. Then in further competition with Tom, Gil _ falls in love with Cecilia.
