The other is the diesel-
powered 190D 2.2, a five-
passenger sedan rated at 4.6
litres per 100 kilometres on
the highway.

These two. diverse - per-
sonalities are found in an ad-
vanced automobile that
manages to successfully
tramslate traditional
Mercedes-Benz quality,.com-
fort and safety into a smaller
package. Of particular note is
the new five-link rear suspen-
sion system, something nor-
mally seen only on racing
cars.

It is combined with a new
front suspension and the

km/h, while a special version
of the car witha higher out-
put version of the same basic
four-cylinder engine recently
set three world: records by
averaging more than 247
km/h for 50,000 kilometres.

Yet, even with this sporting
nature, the cars, have a
spacious luggage compart-
ment, and front-scat
headroom .and legroom
dimensions that virtually
match those of the larger
300D sedan. The cars also
have all of the expected

tioning, power windows and
cruise control to an electronic
AM/FM stereo radio with

The. fuel economy ratings

with the standard. trans-
-mnission are” 11.3 1/100 km
‘urban, 6.4 highway for the
190E and 7.3 urban, 4.6
highway the 490D. Both cars
are also available with a new
four-speed automatic
transmission.

The 190D 2.2 carries an ad-
vanced new diesel engine with
such maintenance-reducing
features as automatic valve
clearance adjustment and
self-adjusting water pump-
accessory drive belt. The car
also features engine compart-
ment encapsulation for
reduced cxterior noise and
there is a_ thermostatically
controlled fuel line heater for
driving in extremely cold
weather. Even: the diesel-
powered version is capable of
160 km/h as a top speed.
